Worldwide unrest prompts time for talk

Panel to examine wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, elsewhere

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 21, 2011) — Attacks by the U.S. and others on Libya have come nearly eight years to the day since operations began in Iraq, and a group of community experts is coming together this week to examine the evolving state of world conflict.

“Perspectives on Conflict in the 21st Century: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Beyond” is a panel discussion set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Community Center, 3061 E. Riverside Drive in Fort Myers.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by The Environmental and Peace Education Center (EPEC), a Fort Myers-based nonprofit organization.

Uprisings in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, and throughout the Middle East as well as longstanding conflicts around the globe will be the subject of conversation as four panelists attempt to find solutions to the obstacles along the path to peace.

David Plazas, community conversation editor of The News-Press, will serve as moderator for the following voices:

— Dr. Richard Coughlin, professor in the Division of Public Affairs at Florida Gulf Coast University
— Jeremy Gentile, Armed Forces Coordinator for the Red Cross in Lee County, whose time in the Army and Marine Corps included three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan
— Jeff George, an Army veteran, former U.S. House candidate and documentary filmmaker
— Dr. Hootan Shambayati, professor in the Division of Public Affairs at FGCU
