EPEC History

img_hm_war Founded in 1982 as the Lee County Coalition for Peace, the organization initially focused on U.S. intervention in Central America, the U.S.-Soviet arms race and the militarization of space. In order to combat the proposed Lee County incinerator in 1990, the Coalition added an environmental agenda and became a non-profit corporation with the new name Environmental and Peace Education Center. Weekly peace demonstrations began with the outbreak of the Gulf War. By the mid 1990s EPECs Conflict Resolution Task Force sponsored workshops for various social service agencies and for Lee County educators and students. U.S. government policy in Iraq shaped EPECs recent history. The organization sponsored forums, panel discussions, street protests, candlelight vigils, a literature table and visits to the offices of our representatives in Congress; as well as a Wage Peace Project that was created to counter military recruiting in area high schools.
