Earth Hour delivers global statement tonight
Florida officially part of worldwide push for action on climate change
FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 27, 2010) — Lights out usually means the party’s over. Not tonight.
An hour of darkness will instead be a celebration of Earth Hour, an event aimed at stemming climate change that will be marked by the state of Florida and close to a billion people all over the world.
The Environmental and Peace Education Center (EPEC) is reminding everyone interested in the preservation of Southwest Florida’s sunshine, beaches and natural beauty to turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m.
It’s part of a movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which this week announced that Florida is joining 29 other states in recognizing Earth Hour. The campaign has quickly become the world’s largest climate change initiative.
