EPEC’s Position on Alternative Energy Development
The Environmental and Peace Education Center (EPEC) believes Southwest Florida can be a hotbed for alternative energy development. This area of the Sunshine State, with its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and sea breezes, is a natural fit for solar, wind and water power facilities. EPEC advocates for and will support, well-organized initiatives designed to construct such alternative power plants in the area. EPEC applauds existing efforts, such as the proposed FL Biofuels plant in Fort Myers, and seeks to assist such undertakings whenever feasible.
Recycling must remain a primary focus as well, and EPEC believes current county- and city-run programs must be expanded so that as many recyclable items as possible can be collected and re-used. EPEC condemns the burning of recyclables in the absence of a proper mechanism for disposal, and invites leaders seeking a solution to consult with the organization for ideas.
EPEC reaches out to local businesses to engender green commerce that can curb the waste of both money and natural resources, while discouraging “green-washing,” or the false promotion of environmentally friendly practices. Tapping alternative energy sources is a way to create sustainable green jobs that can diversify the local economy. As manufacturing jobs decline nationwide, EPEC believes the opportunity to create and maintain such infrastructure must be seized upon. EPEC strives to provide a strong community for clean fuel advocates that can bring people with energy solutions together with people who can foster their implementation.
